It's Still a Grind(er)
Mar. 22nd, 2026 11:20 amCheck it out: two train posts in two days! And thus a public post, even.
For reasons that I will explain in a separate post, I had cause to drive to Reno on Saturday. On my way back, I saw that the rail grinding train that had come through in the wee hours of Saturday morning was on a siding. Traffic on I-80 was light and I slowed considerably and managed to use my phone to take some quick photos of it.

There is a maintenance of way siding off of the Thisbe siding (the first siding east of Fernley, about eight miles east by rail of where I live), where I think they parked the grinder overnight.

I am not certain, but from the cloud of dust, I think they must have been starting to grind again.
There really isn't any other place you can get this shot except from the freeway, because the only other access is a railroad service road. We have gone down that road before, but only when there is nobody around, and it seems like a bad idea to do so why they are actively working.
This probably was not the safest thing I've ever done, but there were no other vehicles around, and I was shooting blindly, because I did need to keep my eyes on the road, even slowed to about 35 mph.
